Grand Island, Nebraska February 14, 2010 – The Nebraska Off Highway Vehicle Association (NOHVA) is pleased to announce it has received a Yamaha OHV Access Initiative GRANT of $13,800. Of the $13,800, approximately $3,800 will be used for entrance trail improvements at Headworks OHV Park near Genoa and $10,000 will be used for insurance costs involving five public ATV, dirtbike and UTV areas in Nebraska. This is the second grant NOHVA has received from Yamaha. The first grant was awarded to NOHVA in 2008.
According to Dan Nitzel, Business Manager of NOHVA, “Liability is always a top concern among land owners that host ATV, dirtbike and UTV trails on their land. The insurance purchased with funding from the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative grant allows us to help protect the land owners who open their land for public motorized recreation. Also, the insurance protects our volunteers from potential lawsuits and injuries. With Yamaha providing the funds for insurance, we can use the funds that we receive from voluntary memberships and donations to help fund trail related expenses. These expenses include maintaining restrooms, trash cans and trash pickup, rider education, and most importantly, trail maintenance.”
One other important item the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative provides funds for is improvements to the entrance trail at the Headworks OHV Park near Genoa. Last year entrance gates were vandalized. The Yamaha Trails grant will fund replacement of the gates and will help fund re-construction of the entrance trail.
“After weather dramatically reducing attendance at our Jamborees in 2009, without the support from Yamaha, the future of NOHVA was at risk”, said Dan Nitzel. “Yamaha has bailed us out of financial trouble two times now so we can continue to support and fund public ATV, dirtbike and UTV trail projects in Nebraska.” Unlike many states, the State of Nebraska has no registration program to fund recreational ATV, dirtbike and UTV trails and trail organizations. Instead, trail funding and maintenance is left up to volunteer organizations like NOHVA.
