NOHVA Rules for Events
By Dan Nitzel, NOHVA Business Manager
As we enter into the main riding season, NOHVA chapters are planning events for this year. When the events are being planned, chapter officers need to follow some basic rules for their events. NOHVA has established these rules based from our previous events and recommendations involving our past insurance carriers.
I want to make it clear that we ENCOURAGE chapters to hold events. However there are ways the events need to be held to ensure that liability is addressed and the events are reasonably safe. Also, we want to make sure that multiple events are not held at the same time. If materials are needed from the Business Office or from another chapter to hold the event, then arrangements need to be made in advance.
Before any event is held, it must first be approved by the NOHVA Board of Directors. If you want your event to be covered by our insurance, NOHVA management needs to know about it first. If a NOHVA chapter holds an event and it is not approved by the Board of Directors, then anyone involved in the event is not covered by our insurance policy and corporate structure.
Any event where a fee is charged to participate, additional insurance maybe required and purchased from NOHVA or NOHVA can help to find another source for insurance.
Spectators must be kept at a safe distance from any controlled event such as a drag race, motocross race, TT race, barrel race, mud race, etc. Details are available from the NOHVA business office.
Most events may require that an EMT be present during the events. All events require written permission from land owners before they can be held. All events require a plan drawn up before the event to address severe weather and the handling of injuries. The NOHVA Business Office can help with all of these issues.
All events require the use of safety gear by the participants. Minimum safety gear includes helmet, eye protection such as goggles, shirt, over the ankle shoes.
Machine size needs to suitable for the size (and age) of the rider. If children are involved, the machine must “fit” the rider meaning that their feet must squarely contact the foot pegs, they must be able to set upright and reach the handlebars, and they must have the size and physical capability to handle the size of machine they are riding. There must be no “first timers” in any event unless the event is specifically intended and the course is designed for first beginners.
All riders must sign an approved release. In some instances the riders must be NOHVA members.
Anyone under the age of 19 must have a signed and notarized release from their parents that is approved by NOHVA unless their parents are with them. If their parents are with them at the event, the parental release does not need to be notarized but will need to be properly signed.
No one under the age of 16 can participate in any NOHVA event unless they are under the DIRECT supervision of a parent at the event AT ALL TIMES. Uncles, Aunts, grandparents, and friends do not serve as a parent unless there is a notarized letter stating that someone is standing in for the parent.
