Trip West in 2008?
By Dan Nitzel
With this article, I propose that a trip to lands west of our fair state be made in 2008! Destinations of the trip should include ATV and dirtbike trails and sand dunes of two, three or four states. The trip could last for one to two weeks covering two or three weekends. Jeep and 4x4 trails should be kept to a minimum in the mountain trails. The ATV trails should be no more than 52” wide and reasonably challenging where a 4x4 ATV is needed and where a good rider on a 2x4 ATV can ride. Each location should offer a place to camp, preferably with power and water for campers. Motels or lodging should be within 25 miles. Travel distances may be limited to locations such as Idaho or Utah if gasoline and diesel fuel become overly expensive, say over $4.00 or $5.00 a gallon.
Time is of essence and 2008 has got to be the year as new travel plans will implemented soon in some of these areas and many of the trails will be closed. Also the price of gas is expected increase even further in the next two plus years to over $5.00 a gallon and maybe much more. I would like to stick to areas that offer exclusively ATV trails, dirtbike only trails and sets of sand dunes. I have not figured in the dirtbike trails yet.
People are certainly welcome to suggest areas that they are familiar with! Give me a call or e-mail and we will talk about it!
If we can put together a schedule and location where we will be, people can come and go as they like. Some people may not care for sand dunes, and some may only want to ride dunes. Personally, I like moderate to challenging dunes, moderate to challenging ATV trails, and easy to moderate dirtbike trails.
ATVs and dirtbikes with carburetors will NEED to be re-jetted for altitudes of about 8,000 feet as trails will range from 6,000 feet to 10,000 feet.
Below is a what a schedule may look like.
