Headworks Update

By Dan Nitzel, NOHVA Business Manager

Fall is upon us once again and this year we are being blessed with an extended fall.  As I write this article it’s one of the last warm days of the year and the leaves are still on the trees.  I wish I could be riding, but this newsletter needs to be completed.  Such are the ties of commitments!

The Fall Jamboree was very successful.  This was our 33rd Jamboree and was held on October 4th and 5th , 2008 at the Headworks Park near Genoa. According to our records, we had an attendance of 1410 ATV and dirtbike riders. Our fall jamboree in 2007 attracted about 1800 riders and the summer 2008 Jamboree attracted 1600 riders.  Many commented that the size of this event was just about right, not too big, not too small.  The weather was wonderful and we were lucky as it rained the weekend before and after the jamboree.

People began arriving to the Jamboree on Thursday and traveled from all parts of Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas and Missouri.

Proceeds of the NOHVA Jamborees are used to pay expenses involving the operation of the local Headworks OHV Park and to support local emergency community services in Genoa and Fullerton.

I would like to say that the entrance trail that received a considerable amount of attention last spring is holding up quite well.  We are beginning to see some low spots form again.  We will have to fill them with a material that can stabilize these bad spots and we have been experimenting with several different techniques.

At the area that had the most problems, such as before and after the main gates, we placed over 1000 concrete blocks in that area last spring that they are working quite nicely.  The concrete blocks totally eliminated the problem of deep ruts on both sides and through the gates.

Now there is a problem with people creating a hole along the outside radius of the concrete blocks.  We plan to fill the hole with locally sourced river rock.  We experimented with a couple of loads of rock just before the jamboree.  The rock did a great job of stopping the erosion from heavy rains, but we did not have enough to fill the hole around the radius of the blocks.  We will be ordering more of the river rock to see if we can fill the hole and stabilize it.

This year we spent about $3000 on the entrance trail.  Loup Power provided a considerable amount of equipment and man power on the project as well.  They deserve a big thanks for that.

In August Dennis and Tami Walz, and I served a lunch of smoked pork, beans with bacon, potato salad and cake for the crew at Headworks.  Yours truly smoked the pork, made the potato salad and beans the day before the feed and Tami got a fantastic cake with the words “Thanks to Loup Power” on it for the guys to enjoy.

As far as problems at the riding area, I have not heard of any lately.   There are still people riding in the parking are too fast and there are a few people riding on the roads.  A lot of these problems have decreased wince school has started.

However, we are asking that people stay vigilant in helping keep the un-ruley riders in line.  This is what YOU can do the HELP.  Pass on the word that people need to stay off the roads, slow down in the parking area and entrance trail, pick up their trash and stop the vandalism or the area will close.  If you see someone on the roads, kindly ask them to stay off the roads. Don’t argue with them, we simply want them to know people are watching.   Mention to them that the riding area will close if the drag racing and riding on the roads and parking area does not stop, the trash does not stop, and the vandalism does not stop.

If you get no results from visiting with riders, watch the riders who are drag racing or riding on the roads.  Find the truck or car they drove to get there and write down their license place number and the location where they are parked.  When a Sheriff’s Deputy drives through or is on duty, tell them who is doing what and where they are parked.  If a deputy is not there, call the Sheriffs department in Fullerton at 911 or 308-536-2452.

In June and July, numerous young riders have been busted for riding on the roads.  Upon being caught, the riders were told that they were banned from riding at Headworks for the rest of the year.  As of today, riders will be ticketed if caught on the road, and may be told that they can’t come back.

To address the problem of people riding on the roads and riding too fast in the parking area, NOHVA has hired off-duty Sheriff Deputies on select weekends to catch the riders and ticket them.  The Sheriff’s Department’s vehicles are un-marked, and the deputies will not be in full uniform.  They will be monitoring riders at Headworks through out the year and they are under orders to ticket ANYONE who is riding on the road – a possible $300+ fine.  If anyone gives them any trouble, the trouble makers will be arrested for disorderly conduct.

Please pass this onto other riders.  Let's all work together to KEEP Headworks a great place to ride and ensure that we will continue to have a great place to ride for years to come!
