Headworks Update
By Dan Nitzel, NOHVA Business Manager

A considerable amount of activity is occurring this spring at the Headworks OHV Park near Genoa.  Dennis Walz and I met with Headworks Superintendent Gary Pearson in March.  We made plans to improve the entrance trail.

For years the entrance trail has been a mud bog at times.  While this was great for those who like the mud, for those who don’t like the mud it caused a lot of problems.  By the time your read this, NOHVA would have spent about $3,000.00 for trail materials.  The Loup Public Power District has committed a considerable amount of resources involving man hours and equipment, and we would like to sincerely thank them for their work!  By the time you read this, work on the entrance trail should be completed.

Our plan for the trail includes:
>> Stabilize the approaches for about 30 feet in two lanes in both directions from the two main entrance gates.  NOHVA has spent about $1,200.00 for cement blocks used to create a porous surface to ride on.  Loup Power provide matting that was placed under the blocks to stabilize them.  Dozens of volunteers helped with the project.
>> Loup Power has leveled about 1600 feet of the trail and sloped the trail so that water will run off.
>> Loup Power moved drainage culverts from the main road so that water will not drain onto the entrance trail.
>> NOHVA volunteers and friends worked to remove trees along the trail so that large equipment can get in to maintain the trail and allow sun light to help with drying the trail.  Loup Power removed the fallen trees.
>> NOHVA purchased and Loup Power donated labor install trail soil stabilization material to reduce the amount of water that can soak into the trail, and operated a sheep’s foot compactor on the trail to improve the stability of the trail.

During just one day of cleanup, member volunteers cleaned up about ten big bags of trash in the parking area.

NOHVA also will replace one the dumpsters in the parking area with a new unit.

This year a new drag race committee has been formed and has met several times.  Timing lights for the jamboree drag races have been purchased and the committee is in the process of getting them up and running.  So far this year, about $7,000.00 has been spent by NOHVA for drag race lights and storage.  For more information read our article in this newspaper entitles “Drag Race Lights”.

We are still working on getting changes for the overflow parking area completed.  For more details about the changes see the “New Rules for Overflow Parking and Camping Area” article in this newspaper.

Recently we have heard concerns about the conduct of some riders who have been visiting the riding at Headworks Park.  Riders are leaving a considerable amount of trash and are frequently riding on the roads.  Both of these actions are unacceptable and we plan to ask the Sheriffs Department to ‘crack down’ on people littering and riding on the road.  If security needs to be hired to supervise the area all the time, the area will be closed as no one has the money to pay for increased security.

Speaking of roads, please be aware that gates have been erected on the Bottom Road that runs along the Loup canal.  The Bottom Road runs from the far eastern part of the main unloading area, runs along the Loup Canal to the canal bridge (near the railroad tracks) located about 1/8th mile west of state highway 22 and 39 intersection south of Genoa.  Anytime it rains this road becomes impassable.   The new gates will be closed when ever the road becomes muddy.

Riders are reminded that the Bottom Road should not ever be used to access the main parking area as it is designed for local traffic only.  Those who wish to ride at Headworks need to access the parking and unloading area from the main Headworks Park entrance located about 3 miles east of Genoa on highway 22.   A map of the route is shown in the Nebraska Ride Guide.   The roads from the highway to the parking area are all weather roads and are improved with rock and gravel.  The bottom road is not improved and will never be improved.  Effective this year, anyone who becomes stuck on the Bottom Road will be ticketed by the Sheriffs Department.
