Thank You Kirk and Erika Bode!

          The Nebraska Off Highway Vehicle Association would like to thank Kirk and Erika Bode formally of Omaha, now living in Colorado Springs for their work in mapping about 250 to 300 miles of trails at the Nebraska National Forest, Bessey Ranger District near Halsey.   Several years ago NOHVA asked for volunteers, Kirk stepped forward and agreed to complete the project.  As a certified surveyor, Kirk’s experience in working with maps and digital media was a great asset.

          When Kirk offered to inventory and map trails at the forest, NOHVA purchased a new mapping GPS unit with a grant from Polaris.  Starting in 2006 and finishing up in late 2007, Kirk and Ericka inventoried every two track trail that they could find over the 92,000 Bessey Ranger District managed by the Forest Service.  They traveled the trails they mapped in their jeep, documented GPS tracks and wrote short descriptions of each route they traveled. 

To produce a final trail map of the area, NOHVA purchased various software packages to combine the mapped routes with existing U.S. Geological Survey maps.  It took three different software packages to come up with a usable product.  To produce a final map, they combined their information that covered about 75% of Bessey with GPS maps and documentation that I had completed in 2006 of ATV trails.  The result that Kirk and Erika assembled was a four foot by four foot color map of trails at Bessey.  The documented routes where turned over to the U.S. Forest Service.  NOHVA used Kirk and Erika’s documentation in compiling our recommendations of routes for the proposed travel plan due to be implemented later this year.
